Syracuse, NY – Saturday's Garrett College-Onondaga Community College match quickly turned into a war of attrition – and the Lakers had just enough healthy wrestlers to come out on top.
"We had multiple guys injured and guys wrestling up weight classes," GC head coach David Wingate said after his squad's 30-22 road win. "At the end of the day, we got it done and I'm proud of the team for stepping up."
The Lakers improved to 10-4 overall and 7-1 in matches against NJCAA two-year opponents.
Camden Hull's 133-pound pin of Marek Sokolowski was the highlight of the match for the Lakers. Nicholas Anderson (125), Kyle Press-Stevens (174), and Jacob Beeman (285) claimed forfeits, and Brooks Smith (149) won when his match with Luis Rivera was stopped at 1:57 due to a Rivera injury.
Dylan Radcliffe had Onondaga's only pin, stopping Matt Price at 4:15 of the 157-pound match. GC held on for the team win as two of the Lazers' other three winners could only post regular decisions.
Onondaga's Noah Horning (165) defeated Everett Nichols, 16-13, and Lazer Cameron Beecher (184) topped Tyberious Clayton, 11-8. Onondaga's Enver Bulatov (197) posted a major decision over Braeden Poorbaugh, 16-4.
The Lazers also claimed a forfeit at 141 pounds.
GC dropped a pair of dual matches against NCAA Division II opponents last week.
Glenville State University – 13-5 and ranked second nationally – defeated the Lakers, 50-6, as 197-pounder Drayk Bunn pinned Justus Stewart for Garrett's only victory. Anderson had the Lakers' lone win in Fairmont State University's 47-6 triumph, pinning Caden Delwarte at 197 pounds.
"Overall I think we wrestled well against Fairmont and Glenville for wrestling against Division II competition," said Wingate.
Notes: The Lakers participated in the Jamestown Open on Sunday. Camden Hull went 4-1 with four pins at 133 pounds, finishing third, and Nick Anderson was 3-2 at 125 on the way to a fifth-place finish. Brooks Smith was 3-2 at 149 pounds while Everett Nichols (157), Kyle Press-Stevens (174) and Braeden Poorbaugh (184) each went 1-2.
