After opening the season on the road against Division III #12 Waynesburg and matches at Lake Erie College in Painesville, OH, the Garrett College wrestling team opened up the home portion of their schedule this past Saturday in CARC Arena against the Ohio Valley University Fighting Scots, a Division II school out of Parkersburg, WV.
"This season is like no other I have been associated. From protocols, cancelations, and keeping our wrestlers mentally engaged is challenging but a challenge we are willing to accept. When we are able to wrestle, we are trying to get our wrestlers as many matches as possible instead of worrying about a traditional dual match, in order to prepare our wrestlers for the NJCAA National Tournament April 21-22 in Council Bluffs, IA. The opposing coach and myself create a match schedule instead of competing in a traditional dual match." Garrett 3rd year head coach John Chambers stated.
The Laker wrestlers battled their Division II counterparts with success. Brandan Myers (125), Armon Nettey (133), Brady Villa (141), Trey Weinell (157), Declan McCann (184) all recorded wins in their Laker home debut. Returning NJCAA national qualifier Loic Tueguo also recorded a win at 197. No matches were contested at 165 and 285.
"It's a great feeling to be back on the mat competing. Our student-athletes deserve to compete after everything they have overcome with the pandemic." said Chambers.
The Lakers return to action at CARC Arena on Saturday, February 27 with Lackawanna College at 12pm and Thiel College at approximately 2:30pm. Matches will be live streamed on the Garrett College YouTube page. Simply search Garrett College on YouTube.
