The Laker Wrestling team opened up its season Friday night against Waynesburg University. The Yellow Jackets came into the match ranked #12 in DIII national rankings, however the Lakers were not intimadated. It started from the first match at 125lbs. Brandan Myers scored a take down with thirty-five seconds left to tie the match at 5-5 and send into overtime. Myers eventually lost in overtime 7-5 but the tone was already set for the night. At 133lbs Armon Netty lost another close match 3-2. After a Waynesburg pin at 141, the Lakers got on the board with Justice Hefley dominating the first and third periods to get the win at 8-4. The Lakers took another two hard fought losses at 157lbs and 165lbs. At 173, Nick Kelbaugh took control of the match early and scored a pin in the first period. Declan McCann followed with a 7-6 win at 184 where McCann scored all seven points in the third period. Lakers only returning starter Loic Tueguo lost 9-6 at 197. Then came the highlight match of the night at heavyweight. Laker freshmen Damon Lemin took #1 ranked Rocky McGeary the distance but lost a tough hard fought match 3-1. In extra matches, freshmen Esdras Castillo and sophomore Blake Reynolds recorded pins.
The Lakers didn't fair as well on Saturday night as they traveled to DII Laker Erie and only won one match as Nick Korenoski won a 3-2 decision at 165lbs. The Lakers will be back in action on Saturday Feb 20 as they take on Ohio Valley at Carc Arena. Match will start at 12:00pm.
