Laker men use late spurt to top CCAC

Pittsburgh, PA – K'Shawn Scott scored the go-ahead basket as part of a late, 6-0 run that put the Lakers ahead to stay in last Tuesday night's 91-82 win over host Community College of Allegheny College.

GC's men improved to 3-3 with their third win in the last four games.

CCAC used a 19-8 run to build a 36-28 lead. The Wildcats, who took a 42-38 advantage into halftime, had a 73-71 lead after CCAC's Nick Delgratta (19 points) nailed a jumper with 6:14 remaining.

Gavin Jackson hit two free throws to tie the game and Scott's hoop with 5:04 left put the Lakers ahead to stay. Daytwan Johnson (12 points) drilled another jumper to make it 77-73 with 4:59 left.

"We played the hardest, best stretch of basketball of our season in the last six minutes of the game," said GC head coach Matt McCullough. "It was a game we needed and was a big boost for our team as they headed into Thanksgiving."

Nate Washington (16 points) scored six points, including a 3-pointer, in the final 3:18 as the Lakers held off CCAC down the stretch.

Alex Vargo scored a game-high 23 points and Antwan Gross contributed 16 points and seven rebounds for the Lakers.

GC's reserves finished with a 21-8 scoring edge, which McCullough said was a key advantage.

"We had guys step up outside of Alex [Vargo] and Jhaiden [Wilson]," said McCullough, whose squad is getting a combined 47 points per game from Vargo and Wilson. "And those guys are the reason we won the game."

Josiah Gonzalez had a team-high 22 points for CCAC while teammate Asaiah Wilson chipped in 18 points.
