Salem, WV – The Lakers rediscovered their shooting touch, putting up 47 second-half points Sunday afternoon to pull away from Salem University's junior varsity, 69-54.
"We shot the ball much better in the second half, and we showed some resiliency coming out for the second half with much better energy," said GC head men's basketball coach Matt McCullough, whose team improved to 7-2. "Our approach to the game and the value we placed on each possession improved."
Tyler Rodeheaver (6 rebounds, 2 assists) led the Lakers offensively with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field. Lamont Powell (5 rebounds, team-high 5 assists), AJ Crosby (team-high 8 rebounds), and Darius Jones (4 assists, team-high 3 steals) each added 10 points.
Powell was especially effective down the stretch, scoring or assisting on 16 of Garrett's final 18 points.
"Lamont Powell stepped up in a huge way down the stretch for us," observed McCullough.
Ezekiel Edwards contributed 8 points and 6 rebounds for the Lakers, who held a 22-21 halftime lead. Mekhi Price (6 points, 4 rebounds), Kobe Tigney (3 points, 7 rebounds), Dalton Wiles (2 points, 4 rebounds), and Terrance Ward (2 points, 3 rebounds) rounded out the GC scorers.
The Lakers used the win to bounce back from a 76-51 loss to Howard Community College the previous Thursday.
"Anytime you can bounce back with a win after coming off a tough loss, it's important," said McCullough. "Howard is a talented, physical team that got the better of us on Thursday night. Fortunately for us, it's only one game in early December that we can put behind us."
The Lakers travel to Cumberland Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. rematch with Allegany College of Maryland that will count in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference standings. GC's 95-93 win over the Trojans (5-4 overall, 1-1 conference) earlier this season was a non-conference contest.
"It's a big-time challenge for us – Allegany is a really solid team and very well coached," said McCullough. "Coach [Tommie] Reams will have his team very prepared for Wednesday night, and I know we will be up for the challenge. I expect it to be another very hard-fought game."
