The Garrett College Baseball team finished their 2021 campaign with a tough loss on the road at Frederick Community College 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars scored an unearned run in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. After five innings there was a lightning delay of thirty minutes and Laker starter Skylar Kanacsky was done for the afternoon, but not after throwing five innings, giving up one unearned run and striking out four. In the sixth, after back to back walks, the Cougars scored a run on a fielder's choice to increase their lead to 2-0. In the top of the seventh, Peyton Carr led off the inning with a double. Juan Pinero singled to put Laker runners on first and third with no one out. Next batter Colby Johnson hit a ball deep to centerfield but Frederick's centerfielder Brevin Neveker leaped at the fence and robbed Johnson of a three-run homer. Carr scored to cut the lead to 2-1. The Cougars added two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run single by Lane Gay to extend the Frederick lead to 4-1. The Lakers threatened in the top of the ninth as Carr and Pinero had back to back singles. After a strikeout, Tanner George hit a flare into shallow right field. Cougar first baseman, David Antone tried to make an over-the-shoulder catch but dropped the ball. Antone picked the ball up and forced out Pinero at second base. Brandon Lucas then flew out deep to centerfield to end the game. " Good game. Kanacsky threw the ball well. He deserved better," says Head Coach Eric Hallenbeck. " Obviously after the lightning delay of close to 35 minutes and I might add I didn't see a bolt all day, I'm not going to run Skylar back out there. The run he gave up in the fourth, I couldn't of thrown it in a better spot in the infield. The catch their centerfielder made was big for them. We had a chance in the third to get on the board and didn't get it done. That's baseball. I know it, my guys know it," added Hallenbeck. " Coming into the game we were locked into the four seed, win or lose. I'm proud of my guys. They came here and competed like I know they are capable of. So now our focus is on the playoffs. We are in. We have a chance. We will see what happens," says Coach Hallenbeck. The Lakers will await the winner of the 5/8 matchup on Saturday and play the winner on Sunday in McHenry, MD to get into the Region XX final four.
