Frederick built a 6-1 lead after two innings and had two stellar defensive plays in the last two innings to hold on and defeat Garrett 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Cougar field. The Lakers got on the board in the first on a leadoff triple by Quintin Smith and a RBI groundout by Elijah Hanible. Frederick got on the board with an RBI single by Nicco German. David Antone led off the bottom of the 2nd with a solo home run to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead. Five batters later German hit a grand slam to put Frederick up 6-1. The score stayed the same until the top of the fifth when Justin Fluhart reached on an error and Smith hit a home run down the left field line to cut the Cougar lead to 6-3. Frederick added a run in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 7-3. The Lakers pushed across a run in the top of the eighth with an RBI single by Joey Perfette. After a walk to Brandon Lucas to load the bases and after a strike out, Fluhart hit a flare to left centerfield but centerfielder Brevin Neveker laid out to record the out and keep the score at 7-4. Frederick threatened in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with no outs, but Dylan McCartney struck out the side to keep Garrett within striking distance. Tanner George led off the Laker ninth with a walk. After a fielders choice by Smith, Elijah Hanible had a base hit to right and moved to second on the throw. Peyton Carr then had a two-run double down the right field line to cut the lead to one at 7-6. Juan Pinero reached on an error to move Carr to third. After a strikeout, Lucas hit a 0-2 pitch down the third base line, but third baseman Wyatt Miles laid out, got to his feet, made the throw to first and first baseman Evan Evans Jr. picked it off the turf to end the game. The Lakers dropped to 11-8 on the year, 1-3 in MDJUCO and 1-1 in DII Region games. They will be back in action on Saturday March 27th as they host Montgomery College. First pitch 12pm.
