COLUMBIA, MD – Here's hoping the third time is indeed the charm for the Garrett College women's basketball team.
The second-seeded Lakers – who lost tough road games to Chesapeake College in both the regular season and the state tournament – get a third shot at the top-seeded Skipjacks in Sunday's NJCAA Division II Region XX title game. They earned that opportunity with a fourth-quarter rally in Saturday's semifinals that resulted in a 76-69 victory over third-seeded Cecil College (19-8).
Hannah Henderson (19 points, 17 rebounds) hit jumpers to start and finish a 6-0 run that allowed the Lakers to break away from a 66-66 tie. Chaunte McDowell (game-high 27 points, 6 steals) sandwiched a pair of free throws between Henderson's jumpers as the Lakers (22-4) completed their comeback from a 53-49 deficit after three quarters.
Chesapeake (17-8) overwhelmed CCBC-Catonsville, 91-46, in Saturday's other semifinal to reach Sunday's 1 p.m. title game at Howard Community College. Emily Truitt (game-high 23 points) and Janice Ladson (21 points, 8 assists, 5 steals) led the way as the Skipjacks qualified for their fifth region final in the last six seasons.
