Meron Gheybreyesus and Kenyon Stone scored 16 points apiece and Malik Whitaker chipped in with 11 points off the bench as the Garrett Lakers defeated Hagerstown 83-67 at Carc Arena on Wednesday night. Garrett was ice cold to start the game as Hagerstown led 13-7 with 12:30 to go in the first half. Iziah Alexander's putback tied the game at 17. Whitaker's two free-throws and tip-in gave the Lakers the lead 21-17. The Hawks cut the lead to one at 23-22 but Oliver Jacquot's three-pointer and three Garrett free throws gave the Lakers a 29-22 lead at the half. Garrett came out of the locker room and started the second half on a 15-5 run. At the ten-minute mark, Garrett's lead ballooned to 24 points at 68-44. However, Hagerstown used a full-court press and created multiple turnovers as they cut the Lakers lead to 69-62 with 2:30 left. That was as close as the Hawks would get as the Lakers outscored Hagerstown 14-5 down the stretch capped off by an impressive alley-oop dunk from Whitaker to Cameron Selders to secure their 20th victory of the year. The Lakers will be back in action on Wednesday, February 26 as they play host to Potomac State College in a pivotal Region XX DII game for both teams. Tip-off time is 7 pm.
