Frederick, MD- The Garrett Lakers won a pair of play in games on Tuesday, May 7,to reach the Region XX final four for the second straight year.
The #6 Lakers defeated #7 CCBC-Dundalk 13-3 in 5 innings, in game one. Trailing 2-0 after the top of the first, the Lakers scored two runs in the bottom of the 2nd on a two-run single by Jacob Goodnight to tie the game at 2-2. The Lakers then erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the 3rd with 2-run singles by Tim Hanible and Jake Hughes. After Dundalk intentionally walked Derek Gaisbauer to load the bases, Colby Johnson delivered with a bases clearing double to put the Lakers up 10-2. Tim Hanible added another RBI single to finish out the scoring in the inning. Cam Douglas added a 2-run single in the bottom of the 5th to end the game. Reilly Rutgers got the win on the mound throwing all 5 innings. It was his 10th career victory.
The second game of the day was against the host team, and #3 seed, Chesapeake College. The Lakers got on the board in the first inning on a two out 2-run single by Juan Pinero. RBI singles by Colby Johnson in the 3rd and Cam Douglas in the 4th put the Lakers up 4-1 after 4 innings. Both teams went scoreless until Chesapeake scored a run in the bottom of the 8th to cut Garrett's lead to 4-2. Matt Kesner scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth extending the Lakers lead to 5-2. After an error and a bunt single, Chesapeake had runners on first and second with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth. Chesapeake's next batter hit a soft liner to Jacob Goodnight at shortstop. Goodnight gloved the ball after it hit the ground, touched the runner at second, and stepped on second base for a double play. After an RBI double to cut the lead to 5-3, Michael Joyce struck out the next batter to send the Lakers to their second straight Region XX final four. Garrett got an outstanding pitching performance from Daniel Osafo. Osafo threw 7 innings giving up four hits, two runs and striking out eight Skip Jacks earning his eighth win of the year. Michael Joyce earned his fourth save on the year throwing the last two innings.
The win sends the Lakers to Frederick, MD, to face #2 seed CCBC-Essex today, May 10, at 12pm in the double elimination Region XX tournament. The second game of the day will be #1 Frederick v.s #5 CCBC-Catonsville at 3pm. This marks the second time in as many years the Lakers won two play in games to advance to the Region XX final four. Last year as the #8 seed, Garrett upset #5 seed CCBC-Dundalk 16-0 and #4 Seed Cecil College 12-2 to reach tournament. Garrett then upset #1 Frederick 14-12 before losing to eventual Region XX Champion CCBC-Essex 4-3 and Frederick 10-8.
